Investigating the Paranormal is a subject that inspires much debate, due in part to the lack of known facts. In effect it is a frontier of human understanding that is still wide open to speculation and often derision by conservative elements of science, religion and society. Luckily we are in a period of increased public interest and awarenss of the paranormal which has been chipping away at the taboo once associated with research into this subject. I intend to fill this section of Lost and Found Ohio in with the basic understanding and concepts behind todays paranormal Investigations tools, techniques and theories. If you are interested in setting up an investigation for yourself please use the contact button in the above menu to contact us. Ghosts 101 To sum up the basic problem with ghosts. 1 Most people dont believe in ghosts, most of those who do, cant agree on what they think ghosts are and even those who generally do agree may not agree on what constitutes evidence of the existance of a ghost or how to go about collecting it. With all this in mind you can see why the field of paranormal investigation is a challenging and sometimes chaotic endevour. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ghost Hunting Gear There are some basic equiptment that almost all paranormal Investigators use to try to capture evidence of the paranormal such as cameras and audio recorders, even tho these devices are not built specifically for this purpose they are well understoood devices that have captured evidence of many other phenomina that they were not designed specifically for so most researchers feel comfortable putting them to this use. There is no one camera type or brand that is better at this attempt than others per se instead what is needed is for the Investigator to be proficiant with all his equipment and understand exactly how it works and what can go wrong or show up as false positives in pictures and audio files. Ohterwise you may find yourself showing basic photography mistakes to others as evidence of the paranormal when in fact it may be a stray hair in front of the lense or perhaps a speck of dust apearing as an Orb. This isnt to say that their are not better quality cameras or audio digital recorders just that none of them are specificallly superior for ghost hunting. Audio Digital recorders are usefull in a variety of ways, first of course they can allow you to take auditory notes of whats going on during an investigation right then and there while its fresh in your mind, record interviews with witnesses and observers as well as catch a recording of odd sounds that you may encounter. They are also used to record long sections of attempted spirit communication as researchers pick a likely spot and ask questions of the spirits they hope are nearby. They are trying to catch EVPs that is Electronic Voice Phenomina, which is when voices or sounds that were not present/ heard at the time or recording are found later as the files are played back. These have been found on recordings since before the album was perfected and are one of the most common types of paranormal evidence that seems to be collected in my experience. Many Investigators use one of the various types of Electro Magnetic Feild detectors on the market one of the simplest and most well known is the K2 meter, all of these devices were not initially built to hunt ghosts they are used because a common theory about ghosts is that they create or manipulte electro magnetic fields either as they manifest or manipulate their enviorment. Often Investigators will scan an area to see if their are any out of place readings, that is ones we cant dissmiss as being generated by wiring or apliances indoors or electric lines outdoors, most meters do not discriminate between manmade feilds and unexplained natural or paranomal EMFs so caution must be exocised when detecting stray electro magnetic fields and resoning their origen as paranormal should be done with care. Many Investigators also use electronic temperature guages as a tool for ghost hunting. this is due to another widley held belief that ghosts suck the heat energy from an area as they collect energy to manifest or manipulate their suroundings. an unexplained cold spot or sudden drop in temperature is often taken as a sign of an active spirit is nearby. Lately thermal cameras have become ver popular for this reason as well, looking for cold spots or other temperature anomalies that cannot be explained or even whole shapes of people that arent caught on conventional cameras in the same area. Camcorders with nightvision or nightshot options to record infrared lighting are very popular with many investigators under the belief that lowlight or low frequincy light is more conductive to the paranormal entities showing themselves, some theorise that ultraviolet lighting may even be detrimental to spirits and or paranormal activity. |
